Students will identify the purpose of FDR's New Deal programs, such as the Civilian Conservation Corps, Works Progress Administration, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. A variety of mediums are used to enhance student learning, including graphic organizers, primary sources, and an audio version of one of President Roosevelt's Fireside Chats.

What was the purpose of FDR's New Deal programs?
Who is this president?
- As students enter the classroom, the teacher will display "Who is this president?", which may be accessed at http://www.edhelper.com/presidents_theme132.htm
- Students will read independently biographical information and will use clues to determine which US President is being described. (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
- Fireside Chat 7 (April 28, 1935)
After reading Who is president? and establishing background knowledge of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the teacher will explain that FDR addressed the nation through radio broadcasts called Fireside Chats that provided hope and reassurance for the American people by informing them of government plans to help the depressed American economy. - Teacher will ask students to listen to Fireside Chat 7 (April 28, 1935) http://millercenter.virginia.edu/scripps/diglibrary/prezspeeches/roosevelt/ and imagine themselves living during these tough times.
BEFORE LESSON
Previewing/Acceleration: The ABC's of the New Deal Graphic Organizer
- Teacher will explain that after Franklin D. Roosevelt became president in 1932, he initiated New Deal programs that promised the American people relief, recovery, and reform.
- Teacher will use New Deal Graphic Organizer to provide acronym, complete program name, and purpose of significant New Deal programs.
Key vocabulary: New Deal Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle
- The teacher will display key vocabulary and meanings on chart paper while previewing them with students orally.

- The teacher will remove chart paper.
- The teacher then will distribute New Deal Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle for students to complete independently. Teacher and students will check answers together.
DURING LESSON
Teaching Strategies:
- Teacher will explain that often when people are out of work and living through difficult times the federal government will step in and help out.
- Teacher will ask students to describe some of the ways the federal government today helps people who are out of work.
- Teacher will distribute copies of the article, "New Deal" http://ap.grolier.com/article?assetid=a2020725-h&templatename=/article/article.html.
- Teacher and students will read and discuss article.
- Teacher will ask the following questions for discussion:
- When did the Great Depression occur?
- What was the New Deal and what president created it?
- Why was the New Deal needed?
- What New Deal programs put millions of unemployed to work on public projects?
- Which New Deal program protected money people placed in banks?
- Which New Deal program regulated prices and wages and promoted fair business competition?
- Which New Deal program helped farmers?
- Which New Deal program supported artist, writers, musicians, and actors?
- Which New Deal program gave workers rights to collectively bargain with their employers (form unions)?
- Which of the New Deal programs do you think was most beneficial and why?
- Teacher will show photos of local PWA or WPA projects such as the old Troup County Courthouse and the LaGrange City Pool to show the effects of New Deal programs in their own community.
AFTER LESSON
Review:
- Teacher will review the completed ABC's of the New Deal Graphic Organizer.
Questioning:
- What was the purpose of FDR's New Deal programs?
Summarize:
Students will work with partners to complete the ABC's of the New Deal Graphic Organizer Activity.
Extending: New Deal Video / New Deal Bingo
- Teacher will show video segments from http://www.unitedstreaming.com/
- America in the 20th Century: The Great Depression
- The New Deal (08:08)
- The Second New Deal (06:00)
- The teacher will provide a blank Bingo card for each student. The students will randomly print 8 of the 9 the New Deal programs listed on the ABC's of the New Deal Graphic Organizer in the boxes on the Bingo card, leaving a free space in the middle. The teacher will provide Bingo chips/markers such as dried beans, colored counters, or small candies. As the teacher calls the purpose of each New Deal Program, the students will place a marker on the corresponding New Deal Program on the Bingo card. Students will continue to mark New Deal Programs until a student has a row (horizontally, diagonally, or vertically) marked. That student will call "Bingo", and the students will recall the each New Deal Program and its purpose to win the game.
